BCAAFC POLICY STATEMENT ON BC TREATY REFERENDUM

1. The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres advocates the principles of the Corbiere decision (SCC) which supports the rights of all Aboriginal peoples regardless of residency.

2. The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres believes that the Treaty Referendum process is further polarizing non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal Peoples in BC and, regrettably, may lead to more instances of racism.

3. The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres opposes the Treaty Referendum process and calls upon Aboriginal Peoples, Aboriginal organizations and other organizations to stand united by actively opposing the Treaty Referendum.

4. The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres urges all British Columbians to actively listen to the position of the First Nations Summit.

5. The BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres stands in solidarity with the First Nations Summit in their opposition to the Treaty Referendum and also supports other organizations opposed to the Referendum.
